Saturday was a special day for the arts in Villach. We had the open air gallery – “ein Hauch von Montmartre” – translated: ” a bit of Montmartre.”
I was invited to take part and spent four hours explaining how I cut glass and marble, where I get my materials, where I learned how to make mosaics, etc. I met many very interesting people and passed out lots of folders and business cards. I’d like to greet any of the website visitors who I saw on the main square of Villach on Saturday. What I did find out is that many people in Villach are interested in mosaics and how they are made. I’d like to announce that I will be teaching classes in my new studio in the 10. Oktoberstraße 11 in the fall. The registration will be through the Volkshochschule Villach, so please look for them in the class program which will arrive some time in August!
Am Samstag war das Offene Atelier – en Hauch von Montmartre am Hauptplatz in Villach. Vier Stunden sind wie im Flug vergangen. Ich habe viel gezeigt und viel erklärt. Da so viele Zuschauer erklärt haben, dass sie an einem Kurs interessiert wären, habe ich beschlossen Kurse im Herbst in der 10. Oktoberstraße 11 zu halten. Die Kurse laufen über die Volkshochschule – bitte unbedigt im Kursprogramme nachschauen. Ich freue mich auf den Herbst!

It’s GEMMAKUN?TSCHAUN time again and my sister-in-law, Andrea Wedenig, and I have been very busy filling my front yard with art for the second Über’nZaunSchaun (Take a look over the fence) exhibit – our contribution to Villach’s open art show GEMMAKUN?TSCHAUN. 310 Artists, 57 Locations in Villach, Austria. May 20th to June 12th.
GEMMAKUNSTSCHAUN 2010 – die dritte Auflage – Kunst in der ganzen Stadt Bis 12. Juni 2010. Wir sind Station Nummer 56 und unser Installation heißt Übern’ZaunSchaun. Ton und Mosaik inder Natur.
I took part in a project started by Ute Gebhard and Dorothea Unkel called Just Black & White. 50 Artists created pieces all 50 x 50 cm using only black and white. The Vernisage was on January 10th, 2010 in Villach at the Offenes Atelier D.U. All 50 pieces will be showing in different venues during 2010 including the Kunsthaus Sudhaus during the GEMMAKUNSTSCHAUN 2010 from May 20th to June 12th. A big thank you to Bernd Schirner for the pictures.

I recently was honored to have my first public showing of my art. My pieces can be seen at my physiotherapist’s group office here in Villach. Ms. Angelika Silli opened her new office Genesezeichen with five other physical therapists this past spring and was very happy to have some art displayed in the waiting areas of the very large office.
The office can be found at Italienerstrasse 69a in Villach and is open all day Monday to Friday. The show will be open until the end of January.
Mit viel Freude kann ich bekannt machen, dass meine Arbeit das erste Mal offizielle ausgestellt wird. Die Ausstellung findet in die Räumlichkeiten der Physiotherapie Praxis Genesezeichen in der Italienerstraße 69a in Villach. Die Ausstellung wird bis Ende Jänner täglich an Werktagen geöffnet sein.

This is series of wall hangings were made because my Klimt vase, which I made for a mosaic competition, was such a success. Many people noticed my work for the first time when they saw the golden swirls ala Klimt. I wanted to include the swirls of course, but get away from purely functional art pieces. Since my class in Spilimbergo, I’ve been concentrating more on wall hangings and adding smalti to my traditional pieces. There will be more swirls to come for sure.
Meine Vorliebe für Klimt führte mich dazu noch einmal ein Klimt Motiv zu versuchen. Die goldene Schlingeln von meiner Klimt Vase waren sehr beliebt und ich musste sie noch einmal dabei haben. Ich versuche jetzt nicht nur Objekte zu verschönern, aber tendiere jetzt mehr zu Kunst für die Wand. Zeit Spilimbergo kann ich nicht mehr die Finger von mein Smalti lassen.

This was a new experience for me. I just spent a week in a place where I was surrounded by mosaics every day and surrounded by people who enjoy and respect the work that goes into making mosaics. For some of the class members it was the very beginning of a new passion, for others like me it was the highlight of my mosaic making until now. I spent 46 hours working on my renditon of a star from the mausoleum for Galla Placidia in Ravenna. At home with my children and everything else that normal life entails, this is simply not possible. It was a lot of hard work and and very rewarding. I was very successful and everybody is happy that I back, me too! Now it’s time to get to work on all my new ideas!

I’ve always loved Klimt’s golden swirls and have been collecting all kinds of gold and gold colored glass just for the perfect piece. When I saw this vase at the hardware store, I knew it was just right.

Ich wollte schon immer ein Klimt Mosaik machen. Ich bin verliebt in seine goldenen Schlingeln. Als ich diese Vase im Bauhaus gesehen habe, wusste ich dass, sie perfekt war.

I’ve created a new category called: “The making of.” I have taught myself how to make mosaics, by reading books and trying things out. Sometimes I failed and the mistakes I’ve made have also taught me a lot. I’ve asked my colleagues in internet questions about special projects. I have learned new techniques by following the progress reports others have posted about their WIP on the internet. I came to the conclusion that this gallery should not only show my current pieces, but also how I learned and from time to time, how I failed. I hope others can benefit from this.
One of the pieces I just posted in this new category is “the making of” my green garden bench. I added it under the real date that it was finished, so since this is a blog format it is near the bottom of the postings. It can be found in the archive in the year 2005 and also under Garden Art.

Ich habe gerade eine neue Kategorie erstellt – es heißt “the making of” oder “wie ich es gemacht habe” auf deutsch. Über die Jahre, habeich mir die Kunst der Mosaik legen selber beigebracht. Ich habeBücher gelesen, Rat vomKollegen im Internet eingeholt, Projektberichte im Internet vom anderen Mosaikkünstler gelesen und Diskussionrunde über Techniken und Materialien befolgt. Ich habeErfolge gehabt und auch manche Fehler gemacht. Ich habeentschlossen auch ein Teil meiner Gallerie der Thema wie ich etwas gemacht habeoder Tipps und Tricks zu widmen.
Meine erster Beitrag in “The making of” ist die Entstehung meiner grünen Gartenbank. Die Bank wurde im Jahr 2005 fertiggestellt, daher findet man den Beitrag auf dieser Blog Seite ganz unten (älter datierte Beiträge sind ganz unten) oder im Archiv unter 2005. Man kann den Beitrag auch unter “Garden Art” finden.

Recently my daughter asked me to print out some mandalas to color and I found so many great ideas for new work in the progress. Here are the designs I’ve chosen.
Nachdem meine Tochter mich darum gebeten hat einige Mandalas für sie am Computer auszudrucken, kam ich auf die Idee auch wieder ein Paar Mandalas auf meiner Art und Weise zu kreieren.
I’ve made several watering cans as gifts for people recently. They were all old beaten up watering cans that I fixed up to match colors of someones house or on this one on the left, the owner of the house had designed a pattern for the glass inlet on her front door. I just transferred the design to the can and now it sits out on her front steps.
My father-in-law had several old watering cans that he was still using, but with much persuasion, and a gift of a couple of new lighter plastic ones, I got several good old originals to work with.
The older the watering can, the more stable the metal is. The newer ones are made to be lighter, but they tend to bend and flex more.
One important thing to remember is to sand the whole watering can down to remove dirt and rust. Then cover the whole can with a metal primer. I use the higher quality grout with more flexibility because the metal of the watering cans might still give if it is left outside when it gets colder. I also advise all the new owners not to leave them out in the frost and not to use them as a watering can, but only as a decoration because of the possible flexing of the metal.
Gieskannen- In letzter Zeit, habe ich mehrere alte Gieskannen in Dekorationstücke umgewandelt. Ein Stück oben links hat einen Muster, der eine Freundin von mir für den Glaseinsatz ihrer Eingangstür entworfen hat. Jetzt sitzt die Gieskanne vor ihr Haus und passt perfekt zur Tür.
Meistens benutzte ich alte Gieskannen. Sie haben mehr Charakter und sind meistens stabiler gebaut. Die neuere Gieskannen sind leichter, aber das Metall biegt sich viel leichter. Ich schleife alle Kannen gut ab um Rost und Dreck loszuwerden. Dann behandle ich sie mit einer Schicht Metall Basislack bevor ich den Mosaik lege. Alle Gieskannen werden mit den besten Fugenmittel wegen der natürliche Dehnung des Metalls bei Temperaturschwankungen verfugt.
